The United States has a very diverse population. One of the largest and fastest growing minority groups is the Hispanic population, which is comprised of different nationalities, including Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, Cubans, Dominicans, Salvadorians, Guatemalans and Columbians (Hispanic, 2015).

In 2013 the U.S. Census Bureau estimated that the Hispanic population represented approximately 17% of the total U.S. population (Hispanic, 2015). In further the current health status, health promotion, health disparities and an example of health promotion prevention, will be discussed for the Hispanic minority group.

Hispanic Current Health Status

The current health status varies slightly between the different Hispanic nationalities but they all have a similar mortality in common. The top leading causes of death amongst the Hispanic race includes cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, chronic liver disease, cirrhosis, chronic lower respiratory disease, stroke, unintentional injuries, kidney disease, influenza and pneumonia (Hispanic, 2015). Diabetes is most common amongst the Hispanic population, when compared to white, non- Hispanic and Asian adults (Hispanic, 2015).

Capitalism and the U.S. Economy

The U.S. economy is diverse and businesses have the power to make economic decisions with minimal government intervention. However, in other countries such as the Soviet Union, the government runs the command economy. The government makes various critical decisions about what businesses can produce, how much they can produce, as well as the amount to charge (Kemp, 2014). In addition, in a command economy, the government offers financial support such as bail outs and incentives when businesses are affected by economic depression. On the other hand, in United States, businesses are not influenced by the government so closely. They make their own decisions such as deciding what to produce, how much to charge and the amount to produce (Kemp, 2014). 

The U.S. economy cannot be considered as a true free market but a mixed economy. This is true because the success of businesses depends on the relationship between the government, private sector, and public sector (Bull, Castellacci & Kasahara, 2014).  The government influences the business in two major ways, which include direct control of prices and through regulations that help prevent monopolies.  It also protects private property and provides subsidies to producers and financial companies in order to boost economic growth and development. The aim of the government is to ensure that citizens enjoy quality goods and services as well as discouraging the production and use of certain products such as cocaine through legislation and taxation.
