Assignment 1: Discussion-Analyzing Emerging Markets Emerging market is used to assess a country’s economy that provides positive future growth as a result of opening up to foreign investment coupled with adoption of important institutional infrastructures that are vital in promoting efficient market transactions. In the past, Gross Domestic Product (GDP) was the main tool used to analyze emerging markets (Lepenies, 2016). However, despite its worldwide adoption, it has been criticized because it relies on historical data and concentrates mainly on economic performance. Therefore, Market Potential Index (MPI) is a critical component used to understand emerging markets and it will be discussed in this paper.

The reason for choosing Market Potential Index (MPI) is because the tool is broad and assesses seven dimensions, which include market intensity, market growth rate, market size, market consumption capacity, economic freedom, commercial infrastructure, and market receptivity. This tool provides important information about different emerging markets thereby allowing comparison of different countries reducing the challenges of assessing relative attractiveness (Kiyak, Kocas & Kunnathur, 2017). The tool is more inclusive because it incorporates non-financial factors like economic freedom, social progress, and market receptivity (Hassan & Craft, 2012). By using this approach, each country is ranked based on various dimensions, followed by assigning of a composite index that indicates the relative attractiveness of each country.             A common checklist may be developed to help market interested parties assess the potential investment markets.
